HARVEST PROSPERITY AND RESILIENCE (HPR)

The Harvesting Prosperity and Resilience (HPR) Project is the continuing Project funded by Rise Against Hunger (RAH) seek to enhance food and nutrition security among 3,100 smallholder farmers in Karonga and Mzimba districts through an integrated approach using a model known as Makwerelo. This model is designed to provide a systematic and step- by step approach to implementing the project, ensuring that it is well structured and efficient. The project is also helping smallholder producers build resilience to shocks and stresses of climate change. The project started in May, 2019 and expected to end in December, 2026. During the year 2022, the project scaled up Lupaso and Gumi sections in karonga and Kamzomera section in Mzimba districts. Currently, the project Target vulnerable selected farmers in Mlare, Gumi, lupaso and Kasoba sections (Lupembe EPA) for Karonga district, while in Mzimba the catchment area are Mtuza and Kamzomera Sections (Eswazini EPA).

Project Goals and Objectives
The overall goal of the project is to enhance food security, community resilience and sustainable agricultural livelihoods in Malawi. Specifically, the project has the following objectives:
  • To increase crop production and diversification among 3,100 smallholder farmers in Karonga and Mzimba districts through the adoption of improved and climate-smart agricultural methods by December, 2026.
  • To improve the nutritional status of 3,100 smallholder farmers and their households in Karonga and Mzimba districts by December, 2026.
  • To build the capacities of 3,100 smallholder farmers in Karonga and Mzimba districts to adapt to climatic variations and hazards by December, 2026.
  • To enhance the incomes of 3,100 smallholder farmers through the promotion of small-scale livestock production, market linkages and VSLs by December, 2026 .
